The purchase of the board game distributor will support Hachette Boardgames’ expansion across Europe.
Benelux law firm Stibbe has guided publishing company and Lagardère SA subsidiary Hachette Livre on its acquisition of board game distributor 999 Games.
The Amsterdam-based Stibbe team advising Hachette Livre comprised partner Duco de Boer, senior associate Jeroen Tjaden and junior associate Isabelle Besselink.
The third largest global mainstream publishing group, Hachette Livre covers all mainstream publishing segments, including general fiction, nonfiction, textbooks and travel books. Hachette Livre branch Hachette Boardgames focuses on board game publishing and distributes via Hachette Boardgames UK, Hachette Boardgames Benelux, and Gigamic and Blackrock Games in France, among others.
Family-owned 999 Games was established in 1990 and is headquartered outside Amsterdam. It distributes around 2.5 million board games per year across the Netherlands and Belgium. In April 2024, 999 Games opened a high-capacity distribution centre to support its ongoing expansion.
Following the acquisition, Hachette Boardgames will boost its European presence in and beyond its current French, UK and Benelux locations as 999 Games introduces new markets for the former’s products as well as upcoming talent.
Hachette Boardgames Isabelle CEO Jeuge-Maynart said of the acquisition: “We are delighted to announce the acquisition of 999 Games, the leading Dutch distributor of board games. This strategic addition will enable Hachette Boardgames to continue its international growth and expand its distribution footprint. Thanks to the recognised expertise of 999 Games, we will be able to offer fun experiences to wider audiences while also strengthening our leadership in the world of board games.”
999 Games key shareholder Marileen Strengers commented: “We are handing over 999 Games to Hachette Livre today with confidence. We share strong values and a common strategic vision, which gives us full reassurance for the next chapter. Deeply committed to our company and brand, we are pleased to see 999 Games continue its development within the Hachette group, while remaining true to the identity and the legacy of our founding father Michael Bruinsma.”
