According to legend, Kanak Bhawan was given to Devi Sita by Queen Kaikeyi immediately after her marriage to Lord Rama. Historically, the temple is believed to have been originally built by Vikramaditya and later renovated by the Queen of Orchha, Vrishbhanu Kunwari, in 1891 AD. One inscription suggests that Maharaj Kush of the Dwapar Yug erected the statue of Lord Rama and Devi Sita in Kanak Bhawan. However, a more widely accepted belief is that Lord Krishna established another pair of deities on the mound before King Vikramaditya rebuilt the temple, which was then followed by renovations by Samudragupta.
